Google releases Android 4.0.4 for GSM Galaxy Nexus and proves how fragmented Android really is
It was always understood that buying a Nexus smartphone would get you the latest and greatest version of Android straight from Google, no waiting for carriers to deem your smartphone worthy of an OS update. It was part of the reason I switched to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Well Google just released Android 4.0.4 ICS to the GSM Galaxy Nexus and the GSM Nexus S. Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners and Sprint Nexus S 4G have not received the update. Word on the street is Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners will be receiving an update to Android 4.0.5 ICS in a few weeks. No word on when Sprint Nexus S 4G owners can expect an update. This is why Android remains a fragmented mess unlike Apple's iOS which releases the update to practically every device at the same time. It's s shame that Google advertises their Nexus smartphones as the first devices to receive the latest Android OS update. It would have been wise to wait and release 4.0.5 to both the GSM and Verizon/Sprint Nexus devices to keep the fragmentation to a minimum.
